Sigh!

Bill,

All 3 of your bullet points have a direct relationship with the play of the guy between the pipes. Yes, I know this is simplifying things but some times it really is that basic.

I know this is obvious but this team sinks or swims with Bryz.

come on Bryz, get your head rite!

Bill, do you think the Flyers will resign Carle in the off season or use the cap space he and Kubina create to upgrade the defense?

Carle will be re-signed depending on the cap hit. if he's asking for the moon, than he's going to go elsewhere. You need to have a balance of high salaries, mid salaries and low salaries.

late game
Let's go Flyers!!!

I don't think they'll be able to keep all three among Carle, Kubina (unless he takes a substantial pay cut) and Grossman. Carle is going to be very high priced, so some sort of middle ground will have to be reached. Grossman is currently underpaid for a guy who plays the number of minutes he can handle, but there has to be a limit on how much you'll pay him, too. Is he a $3 million defenseman?
No.

So, to answer your question, unless the team finds itself in position to sign Suter this summer, they will try to retain at least two of their UFA defensemen, and will certainly re-sign at least one.

flyers will regret not getting a pk/faceoff guy at the TDL...and it didn't have to be gaustad or pahlsson.

Seems to me if they resign carle at 5 mil and grossman at 3.2 there won't be room for pronger or another upgrade. Unless they deal JVR.

They don't need room for Pronger.. As much as none of us likes it he is going to have to call it a career...
Sad, but true..

can't remember the last time the flyers beat the sharks.

edit: just looked it up: december 21, 2000. 4-3. cechmanek with the win. THAT IS (frank)ING RIDICULOUS.

Pronger isn't coming back, and the team has to plan as though he will not be. It would take a miracle at this point for Pronger to be able to resume his career at any point.

One change that I do think will come about in the next CBA -- with relatively little problem so longer as the player is paid in full -- is to eliminate the cap penalty on over-35 contracts where the player has to retire early (rather than go on LTIR for multiple seasons to avoid the cap hit) due to major injuries that could potentially end the careers of players of any age.

The current system does no one any good: not the injured players who are forced to undergo medical exams everyone knows they will fail before they can go on LTIR for the season and not the teams, which have to do a salary cap tap dance over situations such as Pronger's or Laperriere's that were no one's "fault" or an attempt to circumvent the cap by stashing a bad contract for a washed-up player under the LTIR designation.

No worries Sir. It's only a 12 game winless streak against the Jaber Jaws. It ends tonight. This Sharks team is currently playing like the days of Arturs Irbe and Fat Balloon.

Lead Pipe chimp that ripped the face off the woman in Connecticut lock!

Flyers 4-3. Bryzgalov only allows 1 softy tonight.

I tend to agree with you, although in the grand scheme of things the Flyers can bring in three Selke finalists, if the goaltending doesn't drastically improve it doesn't matter.

all the more reason to want to win more pk f/o's...everything hinges on bryz though. which likely means the flyers are 1 and done this yr.

Already traded 4 draft picks, not much cap space or any legit prospects to deal. Flyers were pretty hamstrung. No way for them to add a Gaustad, Pahlsson, or anyone else without overpaying.

Not really. Sharks are in a freefall. Integrating two new players in the lineup tonight, Couture might not play, and Niemi has been awful lately. Very winnable game tonight.
